The San Francisco Conservatory of Music is looking for a creative and strategic content strategist, writer, and producer, reporting to the Vice President of Strategic Communications. If you're someone who believes content is king, gets the Gary Vaynerchuck content model, lives for geeky top-of-funnel content strategy, and buys into Mark Schaefer's Marketing Rebellion, you have found your tribe. We want someone who knows classical music, understands how to empower others to discover and tell the incredible SFCM stories through shareable, thumb-stopping content, and has writing chops with a fun and bold (and maybe slightly sassy?!) voice. If rewriting the rules for music conservatory education, engaging the next generation of world-class musicians, and sharing the remarkable successes that come from students and faculty who dare to color outside the lines will make you spring out of bed in the morning, then SFCM is your home calling, and we can't wait to meet you.
Writing - creates original short-form news/success stories of faculty, students, and alums, plus Buzzfeed-style blog posts.
SEO - writes blog posts using trigger words that get SFCM in the Google answer box for prospective students, and map audience segment needs (e.g. prospective students, alumni, donors, etc.) to keyword strategy so that content ranks higher on the SERP. Work with Web Producer on SEO optimization via website metadata and title tags. We want to win search here.
Collaborates with Senior Graphic Designer and Digital Content Coordinator on social media content and video creation, overseeing storyboards, scripts, and talking points for videos that express SFCM's brand.
Enhances online performance calendar content, working with Senior Graphic Designer and Web Producer to create depth, user engagement, and a multimedia experience.
Supervises contract writers and student assistants who also produce content.
Supports and manages colleagues' content creation.
Produces editorial calendar and coordinates with colleagues on content production that celebrates the successes of SFCM. Someone who can take existing pillar content (a press release, recording of a concert, video of a masterclass, PR coverage in national outlets) and lead and coordinate teammates to extract/create and distribute microcontent across channels (what goes on the website, in the email, on Instagram, on Facebook, and on Twitter that all directs back to that pillar content).
Must also be able to generate new content ideas as well as lead the team in brainstorming new content ideas, and then oversee execution of those ideas.
Ensures consistent institutional brand and voice across all channels, i.e. no matter what content is produced and on what channel it's distributed (email, social media, website, video, blog, etc.), the voice consistently adheres to brand guidelines and standards.
Evaluates success of past produced content - working with Web Producer to pull Google Analytic reports for site traffic sources, SEO evaluation, pulling and analyzing social media campaign analytics.
Additional Copywriting & Editing
Newsletters - develops copy for SFCM newsletter and partners with colleagues to provide copy editing for individual department's newsletters, critical eblasts, and special projects to ensure a unified brand voice across all public email blasts.
Copywriting for brochures, print materials, and advertising campaigns and partners with Admissions and Advancement to develop a unique voice and tone for their audiences.
Serves as the website's copy editor. Need to be able to meet with a faculty and department heads, hear what they want with an understanding of classical music, and then translate the academic- or musically- specific language to public-facing copywriting.
Writes ad copy for Google search marketing campaigns, working with Web Producer to traffic ads and then optimize campaigns through A/B testing and analytic insights.
Manages traditional print and outdoor advertising — media buying, copywriting, overseeing production schedule, and delivering creative.
Manages media sponsorships, live broadcasting, and streaming relationships.
Performs other duties as assigned with occasional night and weekend work for concerts and events.
Strong writing, copywriting, and editing skills, combined with the ability to create, revise, and repurpose content.
Ability to execute SEO strategy, sourcing top keywords keywords from Google Analytics search reports and integrating those keywords into writing, and a desire to become an expert about search as a powerful marketing tool.
Knowledge of classical music, both the art form and industry—enough to challenge the industry status quo in the bold SFCM voice.
Extreme attention to detail and commitment to quality. Eagle eye proofreader.
Experience leading content development. Supervisory experience preferred.
Ability to balance multiple projects and take initiative to solve problems.
Independent thinker with the ability to prioritize, create timelines, and meet deadlines.
Excellent oral communication skills in order to talk and collaborate with a wide variety of colleagues across the organization.
Visual literacy and experience collaborating with graphic designers to influence how content will be presented in multiple formats.
Flexibility and willingness to change direction if needed.
Fluid competency in Google business apps (G Suite) and working knowledge of an email service provider (such as Constant Contact).
Proficiency in a Content Management System (CMS) preferred.
Additional Salary Information: Health (Medical, Dental and Vision), welfare (Life & Disability) and retirement (403b) benefits included.
