Executive Director of Marketing and Communications Carle Illinois College of Medicine University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign PRIMARY POSITION FUNCTION/SUMMARY The Executive Director of Marketing and Communications is an executive leadership position, empowered to play a leadership role in the marketing and communications efforts of the Dean and the executive leadership team across the Carle Illinois College of Medicine. This individual will build and maintain a state-of-the-art marketing communications operation; balance and manage multiple priorities; lead and effect change in a dynamic and complex environment; promote excellence across the team's diverse functions, talent, and technical skills; establish the foundation for a dynamic environment that embraces creativity and innovation; and foster a spirit of teamwork and progressive thinking in order to guide the college on a path towards growth in enrollment, advancement, and reputation. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Leadership - Set the standard of excellence, providing oversight of the output for the Marketing Communications unit and its respective activities.
o Manage a diverse marketing communications staff with varying skill levels across disciplines. o Work with each team member to identify short-term and long-term strategic goals for the college as it relates to their work and alignment with the college marketing objectives. o Partner with college, university and Carle leadership to create strategic marketing plans and subsequent materials in support of the college's faculty, staff, students, recruitment and advancement efforts, and research and teaching programs, ensuring that institutional needs and marketing communications resources/services are closely aligned, while using resources efficiently and effectively. o Create team executional plans that align with the identified goals and objectives, effectively represent the vision of the Dean and the college's priorities, and advance visibility and engagement with the college, both internally and externally. - This person will be an influencer across the College of Medicine:
o Lead the strategic direction for all Carle Illinois communications initiatives o Collaborate closely with the executive associate dean; associate deans for Finance and Administration, Student Affairs, Advancement, Research, Academic Affairs, Clinical Affairs; assistant deans for Accreditation, Research, and Diversity and Democratization of Health Innovation; and heads for each of the two academic departments and various other programs. o Provide leadership to Carle Illinois units, campus partners, and Carle to guide them in operating with the college's brand, visual identity and messaging. o Act as Chief Communications Officer for the college, attending campus-level meetings to represent Carle Illinois, ensuring that information presented and discussed is shared with the marketing communications team, the dean of the college and other members of the Carle Illinois executive leadership team as appropriate. o Foster positive working relationships with internal and external partners to advance the college's vision. o Manage select intra-campus relationships including those with Public Affairs and the Office of Governmental Relations. - Set annual objectives and performance measures and analyze effectiveness against goals.
- Direct unit-wide budget planning and financial management activities.

Strategy - College brand perception and messaging:
o Set the strategic marketing goals and oversee execution of marketing and engagement activities based on the college's goals and objectives, continuously working to heighten awareness and enhance the brand of the college. o Develop long-range strategic planning for the college in regards to marketing communications and oversee the brand identity of the College of Medicine. Critical to the success of this role will include managing staff to implement the plan and leading other marketing communications activities as needed. o Introduce and evaluate new methods and technologies for keeping the college and its constituents highly engaged. - Websites:
o Ensure clear, consistent, and current representation of the college's and university's mission and visual identities along with individual department and program initiatives across all Carle Illinois websites. Marketing Communication - Office of the Dean:
o Provide management, editorial writing, talking points, briefing materials, media interview content, internal communications, external stakeholder communications, and other communications and marketing services for major college events and presentations as needed. - Lead the development of the Carle Illinois marketing and communications strategy, goals, and activation to insure effective, consistent branding across the college.
- Set communications goals and objectives in collaboration with executive leadership for the college, units, and programs.
- Provide strategic marketing and communication consulting to college leaders to deliver against their goals and priorities.
- Provide strategic leadership, in collaboration with the Director of IT, in managing the college's digital presence through its websites and digital media channels.
- Media Relations/Crisis Management:
- o Provide guidance in the field of public and media relations, including relationship development and promoting administrators as thought leaders.
o Identify public policy/news opportunities to showcase the college's work through blogs, op-eds, etc. o Lead risk management and reputation management efforts, especially on sensitive public relations issues: - Work closely with the dean and the college's executive leadership team to strategically plan for and develop communications required in response to important issues and crisis situations.
- Provide expertise on media interaction, crisis stakeholder engagement, and reputation risk assessment, based on industry best practices.
- Enhance and strengthen the college's engagement internally with the campus Office of Governmental Relations (OGR) and externally with potential legislative representatives and other influencers in order to advance the research and funding to support the college's goals.
EDUCATION Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree preferred. EXPERIENCE REQUIRED A minimum of seven years of relevant experience including leadership in communications and/or marketing. Creative thinker with excellent interpersonal skills and outstanding verbal and written communication skills. Proven organizational skills to manage multiple deadlines and complex projects. Ability to effectively interact with both internal and external constituents. EXPERIENCE PREFERRED Communications experience in higher education and/or healthcare setting, preferably in a large and complex organization. This is a full-time (100%), 12-month, benefits eligible, Academic Professional position that reports to the Dean in the Carle Illinois College of Medicine. Salary is commensurate with experience.
