Position Description: The Marketing & Communications Coordinator leads and directs the Housing & Residential Life (HRL) Marketing & Communications team and provides strategic direction, planning and management of all aspects of the Housing & Residential Life (HRL) marketing and communication program. This position also develops, coordinates, produces, and distributes all HRL communications and publications. Duties are completed under the supervision of the Assistant Director of HRL-Conference Services & Communications/Marketing.
Responsibilities: Planning and Leadership – 25%
Develop and implement short and long-term strategic marketing and communication plans for all HRL programs and business lines.
Provide administrative direction and coordination for a comprehensive marketing and communication program for Housing & Residential.
Direct and coordinate the conception, composition, editing, production and monitoring of HRL publications, web site content, social media presence, and digital signage and other marketing and communication products and tactics as needed.
Develop an HRL branding plan that maintains a strong recognizable HRL image that supports the mission of HRL and focuses on maintaining high housing occupancy levels during the academic and summer months.
Evaluate the effectiveness of HRL’s marketing and communications strategies and campaigns on an annual basis.
Manage and track the development of communication materials supporting multiple constituencies including but not limited to prospective and current students, parents, guests, visitors and University staff.
Develop, implement and maintain marketing, branding and advertising policies for all HRL communications.
Evaluate the impact of trends in marketing and communication on applicable activities and implement the necessary changes to improve the program.
Serve as liaison to the Office of University Relations and consult with the senior managers to determine the representation of HRL to the greater University community and outside news agencies.
Develop, manage and coordinate production of all HRL communications and marketing materials.
Advise and guide HRL staff regarding marketing and communication projects, initiatives and deadlines for various departmental work areas.
Create and maintain annual HRL marketing and communication plans and direct resource allocation.
Develop, implement and monitor the annual marketing/communications budget for HRL.
Review and edit all printed publications and electronic media for content, style and literary requirements.
Ensure that all communications and design are appropriate and in support of the mission of HRL and the University of Minnesota.
Develop and implement publication schedule and deadlines in coordination with HRL business units and with appropriate University departments.
Coordinate and conduct focus groups and market research initiatives.
Create strategies that evolve print communications to the digital world whenever feasible. Work closely with web staff to merge and expand print communications to online representation and accessibility.
Manage web content for HRL and provide direction to the HRL Graphic/Multimedia Designer on all changes, revisions, and upgrades.
Manage and coordinate all work with designers, consultants, photographers, promotional and apparel suppliers and other University departments/offices.
Develop and maintain positive collaborative relationships with key campus communication personnel.
Develop and coordinate promotions for University of Minnesota residence halls and apartments.
Social Media Management– 20%
Manage social media content distribution for HRL.
Provide strategic plan for social media content and management to prospective and current residents, parents, guests and other HRL stakeholders.
Develop benchmarking goals and continually measure the impact of social media.
Administrative & Supervision – 15 %
Select, train, supervise and develop the Graphic/Multimedia Designer.
Develop performance plans/objectives for direct report.
Conduct annual mid-year and year-end performance reviews for direct report.
Conduct regularly scheduled staff meetings and one-to-one meetings with direct report.
Assist with the development of HRL’s annual strategic business plan, and develop annual work plan/goals for the marketing and communications program.
Prepare quarterly status reports and an annual report for the marketing and communications program.
Supervise student marketing and social media intern, and student graphic designer intern.
Facilitate and lead the HRL Communicators Group.
External Communications – 15%
Manage and coordinate external presentations and marketing fairs (e.g. Admissions & College Events).
Review all HRL content included in publications/communications for external departments.
Manage data request from internal and external agencies.
Assist with coordination of media request responses in coordination with University Services and University Relations.
Monitor news publications and social media for news related to HRL and recommend proactivestrategies for responding to inquiries and/or preparing draft responses to news stories.
Work Environment: Work is performed mainly in an office setting
Salary: $60,000 - $64,000
Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Art or related field, or non-communication related degree with additional two years of professional communications experience.
Minimum 4 years full time communication/marketing experience. Non-communication related degree individuals must have 6 years of progressive responsibility in communications.
Knowledge of computer applications such as Adobe Creative Suite programs, Web Content
Management programs and Microsoft Office
Experience managing multiple projects
Familiarity working with social media in strategic communication
Desire to learn new technologies and improve processes
Experience working in a University/College environment
Ability to gather, analyze, and report information
Experience writing for publication (e.g. newsletters, magazines)
Experience writing and delivering key messages through a variety of tactics
Direct experience using social media as a strategic communications tool and advance knowledge and
understanding of social media networking platforms
Familiarity with video editing software
Experience taking original photographs and ability to do lite editing, retouching of photo’s etc.
